Call for Expression of Interest: Feminism and Digital Rights Lab

Open Heroines
2 min readOct 8, 2022

The Feminism and Digital Rights Lab at Open Heroines kicked off in August. After riveting deliberations, the lab members decided to build case studies on “Digital Rights Concerns in Facial Recognition.” In exploring this topic, the lab will investigate the deployment of facial recognition technologies in some cities and will be on the lookout for gaps in policy and design as well as the impact of those technologies on women, girls and non-binary people.

Currently, the lab is working on London (UK), Nice (France), Johannesburg (South Africa), and Buenos Aires (Argentina) and would also be keen on exploring cities in the Middle East, Oceania and Asia as well as New York City.

How can you help us?

We are inviting resource persons (i.e. researchers, techies, policymakers, civil society actors ,designers and engineers, among others) to help us do light research in the cities mentioned above and to also help us explore cities in the Middle East, Oceania and Asia. We are seeking to answer the following questions:

  • What facial recognition technologies are in place?
  • What are they used for? How widely are they used?
  • What concerns have the public/civil society raised about these technologies?
  • Who is at risk if data is in the wrong hands? Women? Non-binary people? Children? Black people? People of colour?
  • Are these technologies regulated?
  • What does the regulatory/institutional framework look like?
  • Does the public institution/government collect facial recognition data from third parties? Who is sharing facial recognition data with the government?

If you would like to work with us in this lab, please fill in this form by October 23, 2022.

Writing guidelines will be shared upon declaration of interest.

Note: All contributions will be on a voluntary basis. However, if you are interested in contributing and have some difficulty, we may provide an honorarium.

If you would also like to join the Open Heroines Community, read more about us here and then fill in this membership form and we’ll soon get back to you.
