Open Heroines is a community of women and non-binary people who work in the open fields, mainly in civic tech, open data and open government. We are currently a volunteer-run community, and this will be our first long term employee position.

Over the course of this year, we’ve been working to better understand our community and the barriers to participation. The research was led by Anca Matioc and Ana Joaquina Ruiz from Agency, along with support from Nonso Jideofor, Ifeoma Okonji, and Ayomide Faleye.
In August 2018 Open Heroines received a grant of $100,000 from The Hewlett Foundation to support our work over two years. This funding was a pivotal moment for our community — previously, our only resource was voluntary time.
